In an early January social media post, lead singer of The Weeknd, Abel Tesfaye, teased a possible new album on his Instagram page. This music would be the first album release since March of 2023, with his Starboy (Deluxe) release.
The Weeknd’s success started back in 2011, when it released the first mixtape, House of Balloons, in March of that year. The mixtape has more than 178,000 listens across multiple platforms and kick-started Tesfaye’s career when he uploaded the music anonymously on YouTube.
Tesfaye’s 2018 Extended Play (EP) album, “My Dear Melancholy,” topped the charts of Billboard Hot 100 and became his number one album with just over 1,200,000 listeners. One of his hit songs from that album include “Call Out My Name,” which has a little under one million streams.
The Weeknd’s overall top song is from the hit album “After Hours,” which was released in 2020. This top song, “Blinding Lights,” has more than 1,500,000 plays.
It is not a surprise that whatever possible album The Weeknd may release would not be anything less than great. With over 114 million listeners per month on top music streaming service Spotify, The Weeknd has many loyal fans excited for the new release.
On Tesfaye’s Instagram post, thousands of comments flooded in expressing excitement for the potential of new music. Many notable social media content creators dropped a comment on the post, even iconic influencer Trisha Payatas. “Seated,” she says, referencing her patiently waiting for the album to come out.
Other comments from fans pointed out this potential album would start 2024 off with a bang. “He already making 2024 the best year ever,” says Instagram user ralfbaby_. Social media user abelsword also said, “album of the year incoming…”
While information about the new album, speculations from The Weeknd social media fan pages have already started. Some expect the photo that Tesfaye posted on his Instagram to be the official album cover, but others argue it is just a temporary image to keep the fans in suspense. The third slide of the photos Tesfaye posted presented a black screen with a question mark in the middle. The first two slides were prior album covers of his, so this final photo of the post may be a hint towards what is coming.
No matter what, though, the album is set to be one of The Weeknd’s best hits. For more information on upcoming news about The Weeknd, visit www.theweeknd.com.
