Midsummer’s Night Dream worth the cost?

A breakdown of all the factors that go into one memorable evening

For the most part, every senior is stressed when it comes to Prom time. Will I have a date? Where will I get my dress? Where will I buy her corsage? Where will I get my hair and makeup done? Who is going to take the pictures? Prom is a lot of stress, but the real question is do the students feel like they are reaping the rewards when it comes to that so called “memorable” night?

“This year’s senior class brought in a lot of money which really helped,” says Senior Class Advisor, Mr. Govreau. This year Prom, at the A La Carte Pavilion, will cost about $30,000. That’s a lot of money for one night but, all of that money covers the cost for the pavillion, decorations, food, DJ, and shutter booth for photos.

Student and Senior Council President, Nick Russin, adds “We had a significant amount of money at the end of Junior Year, especially with the profits from Mr. & Miss Newsome, but we still needed to make a lot of money to cover prom. So, our two fundraisers this year were the class t-shirts and the Newsome Golf Tournament. With those two combined along with the ticket sales for Prom, we’ll be in good shape.”

What changed between this year and last year in pricing? Mr. Govreau responds, “Not much. We didn’t pay for the busses for Grad Bash this year which helped and we were able to drop Prom Ticket prices from $70 (last year) to $50 (this year).”

Now this is where things get interesting. A prom dress will cost an average of $250 while a tux rental will cost around $100. Counting in alterations ($30), jewelry ($25), nails ($50), shoes ($40), corsage/boutonnieres ($20 each), and transportation ($40), for Girls prom costs around $455 while a Guys prom costs around $200 and you haven’t even bought your ticket yet!

Many students are very excited about Prom and claim to have been waiting for this since freshman year. Russin says, “I feel like it’s going to be one of the most exciting activities of Senior Year.” Russin along with other students on Council were main contributors to help plan this special event.

Despite all the stress, planning, and costly things that accompany Prom, Newsome students would definitely agree prom is worth the cost. This fun and magical night will be a memorable one as students get another night of freedom surrounded by their closest friends and peers.
