With no theatrical releases for any animated films so far this year, a blast into the animated past might
be the retrospective move 2024 needs. This is exactly what happened over a decade ago when
legendary directors Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson teamed up to create what Spielberg calls “The
film he always wanted to make,” The Adventures of Tintin.
by Late 2011, Both Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg had proven to the world they were the most
successful filmmakers of their generation. Spielberg already had under his belt some of the largest
blockbusters ever made, such as Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, Jaws, Schindler’s List, and more.
Jackson, on the same note directed the most acclaimed trilogy of all time, The Lord of the Rings.
However, neither of them had ever tackled an animated feature-length film. Jackson had, though,
directed King Kong a few years prior, which with the help of actor Andy Serkis, managed to bring King
Kong to life using Motion-Capture technology. Spielberg then, through Jackson and Serkis, managed to
start production on The Adventures of Tintin. This animated feature was based off the young detective
cartoon Tintin from the 60s Spielberg grew up watching and being inspired by.
When the film came out, it was Certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, and managed to profit on the Box
Office, however the film unfortunately failed to have a lasting legacy. However, despite being ultimately
lost to the younger generations today, it still is an incredibly entertaining and well-paced film that was
ahead of its time in Stop-Motion Animation.
