It is no secret that the Valenchime season is among the most popular of events to students during the school year. Valenchimes have made their way around Newsome classes for many years now, and the chorus fundraiser is stronger than ever in 2024.
A Valenchime is a Valentine’s themed singing gram that students can buy for their friends, teachers, or lovers to be sung to them in class on Valentine’s Day by groups of chorus elite members. Buy one in the cafeteria starting Jan. 26, fill out a form, pay five dollars, and anticipate the reaction of the person on the other end!
“It helps students de-stress and laugh with their classmates. I think it puts everyone in a better mood,” says long-time chorus Chamber and Elite member Reese Weicht. When asked who her favorite class to go to is, Weicht says, “Definitely Mrs. Neu. She gets so excited.”
Valenchimes are a notoriously funny way to embarrass your friend, or annoy your favorite teacher. “One year we sang ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ to the same kid like 30 times in one day,” says Weicht. Senior Emma Vo agrees: “It gives a great laugh to the class and serves as a source of entertainment,” says Vo. “I received a Valenchime last year from one of my friends, and it was dedicated to me and three other people. They sang ‘I Want it That Way’ by the Backstreet Boys.”
