After attending one match so far in their 2023-24 season, the Newsome Boys’ Varsity and JV wrestling teams are ramping up their energy and jumping right into the new year.
In general, high school wrestling matches are three periods long, with each period lasting for two minutes; however, matches can be ended early under different circumstances. At the end of the three periods, the wrestler with the most points wins.
Even though wrestling is typically viewed as an individual sport, it is also a team sport that counts up personal winning scores to decide which team has the most points in a match.
JV wrestler, Rodion Gabidullin, says, “Newsome wrestling has been very fun and entertaining, we are like one big family.”
Gabidullin also says, “Our practice is different per team, but we usually have a warm up, then drills, and sometimes wrestling with each other. We take specific situations and do more practice after meets.”
The teams have left their blood, sweat, and tears on the mat in anticipation for their district, regional, and state tournaments in the upcoming months.
