September 23, 2021
The Straz Center for the Performing Arts brings Broadway back after a long-dormant season. Broadway shows will be returning in mid-October, but local shows, comedians and musicians have started in September. Here are just a few of the options performing this fall:
Jekyll and Mr. Hyde: “Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” is a four-act play written by Thomas Russell Sullivan and actor Richard Mansfield. It is an adaptation of the “Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” by the Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson. This show will begin playing on Oct. 20 and run through Nov. 14. The theatre will be operating at full capacity for this show, and masks are required at all times.
Tootsie: “Tootsie” is an American Comedy Musical based on the 1982 movie of the same name. The story follows Michael Dorsey, a talented but difficult actor who struggles to find work until one show-stopping act of desperation lands him in the role of a lifetime. The theatre will be operating at full capacity for this show. While social distancing will not be enforced, guests are still required to wear masks at all times. Tootsie will begin showing on Oct. 26 and run until Oct. 31.
Voices of the Community: Behind the Curtain: Have a conversation about the careers and job skills needed to make the magic happen on stage. This one-night event will be on Oct. 28. The theatre will be operating at its full capacity for this show. While social distancing will not be enforced, guests are still required to wear masks at all times.
The Florida Orchestra: Pictures at an Exhibition: Hear the Florida Orchestra as they serenade the audience with the vivid sounds in Pictures at an Exhibition. This single-night event will be taking place on Nov. 14. The theatre will be operating at full capacity for this show. While social distancing will not be enforced, guests are still required to wear masks at all times.
My Fair Lady: My Fair Lady is a musical based on George Bernard Shaw‘s 1913 play Pygmalion, with book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe. The story concerns Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl who takes speech lessons from professor Henry Higgins, a phonetician, so that she may pass as a lady. Currently, this show is only available as part of the “Season Ticket” package.
Due to the rise in COVID-19 cases, and the Delta variant, masks will be required indoors for both vaccinated and unvaccinated guests and staff. Using the Straz To Go app, guests can access electronic tickets and information regarding parking, food menus and health information.
