Newsome’s a Midsummer Night’s Dream

Miles Swan, Online Editor-in-Chief

On Nov. 8, 9 and 10, Newsome High School’s theatre program will be presenting Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Tickets can be preordered online, at www.newsometheatre.com for only $5 for students, and $8 for adults, though you can also buy tickets at the door for $10.

This won’t be your regular Shakespeare, but instead, a modern telling, which would be happening at 7 p.m. from the 8th to the 10th, which will be a showcase for Newsome’s talented theatre students.

Some of these students include Robert Kelley, as Lysander, who has Hermia, played by Hannah Clor, as his love interest. Ian Negrone will be playing Demetrius alongside Sarah Romera, who plays Helena.

More characters who add a sense of finesse to this play include Tyler Mann as Theseus and Eva Gutierrez as Hippolyta, who is the betrothed duke of Athens, and his Amazonian fiancée.

The plot reaches an all-time high when the king of fairies Oberon, Queen Titania, and their minion Goodfellow/Puck—who are played by John Provost, Alexandria Hickey, and Angelo Gonzalez respectfully—disrupt the love lives of two certain characters, causing conflict among the closest of relationships.

Newsome’s Theatre Director, Dr. Chad Cornwell is leading the cast on a modern interpretation of this classic, setting the story in today’s world of 2018 Manhattan. Though the cast is using the original Shakespearean dialogue, the modern costumes that go along with the minimalist, yet extravagant set design giving off a sense of awe.

“Our theatre is a non-traditional performance space, so we have to think outside the box when designing and creating sets.” Cornwell stated. This piece of theatrical art is partially directed by students Maria Moleiro and Dillons Thanasides, as well as technical directors Paola Negro-Rodriguez and Sydney DeFelix.

“Being an educational theatre company, our program engages students performers , directors, and designers to create and build set and costume designs, practice acting concepts and activities learned in Theatre Class.” Cornwell added.

These students aren’t just your average run of the mill theatre geeks, but instead, seasoned actors,  having competed at the District nine Thespian Individual Events (IE) festival on Oct. 6, at Gaithier High School. Newsome won favorable rating on 13 plays recently.

Don’t forget, from Nov. 8, to Nov. 10, one can go see this play at Newsome. Lastly, you can order a ticket from either online at www.Newsometheatre”, or they can be purchased at the door.
