A live performance of Hairspray, the musical, aired on NBC this past Wednesday, and the reviews were as big as the hair on Tracy Turnblad’s head.

The musical takes place in the 60’s, and stars Tracy who is a bigger girl with even bigger dreams. She skips school one day to audition for a role to dance on The Corny Collins show in hopes to win over the heart of teen-heartthrob, Link Larkin.

Her goal soon morphs into something much bigger than dancing on T.V., when Tracy and her best friend, Penny, meet Seaweed and his mother, Motormouth Maybelle. Following her heart, and her morals, Tracy is determined to integrate the show and change history. But to do so, she must get around the show’s producer and Amber’s mother, Velma, who is stuck in her own “white” ways.

The star-studded cast included acting veterans such as Kristin Chenoweth, Jennifer Hudson and Martian Short, performed beautifully alongside the upcoming younger actors such as Dove Cameron, Ariana Grande and Garrett Clayton.

Jennifer Hudson explained to usatoday.com, “The power in ‘Hairspray’ is no matter your size, your race, where us from, the type of lifestyle you live, it celebrates everyone.” This message feels more relevant and important in society today than any past release dates.

Though there were minor technical glitches throughout the musical: lights going on and off, or sound dropping in and out, the once Broadway Musical, now TV musical still managed to steal the hearts of Americans.

The story progresses with numbers that are choreographed energetically. The Broadway hits come one after another starting with “Welcome to the 60’s” to “I know Where I’ve Been” and finishing strong with one of the best and biggest finales, “You Can’t Stop the Beat”.

Something the show could have gone without was the non-stop interruptions made by the over enthusiastic narration of Darren Criss.

For the future of T.V. musicals, ‘Hairspray Live’ will be hard to top.
