90’s flashback: Chokers are back in style

A girl struts confidently down the street, wearing the most in-fashion jeans, trendy off-the- shoulder shirt, and strappy sandals. She is the icon of the current fashion trends all around the United States, and her outfit reflects several eras of fashionista history that have made a comeback. However, the strongest, boldest, and perhaps most aesthetic-essential accessory is nowhere to be seen, and her lack of style now turns heads. Where it this necessary style addition?

Choker necklaces have made an enormous comeback in 2016, and people all over the U.S. especially have brought them back into style. They may have been considered at one time the icons of style, and nevertheless, they are back to dominate the fashion industry.

But before they found their way into memorable 90’s fashion, like almost anything else in the world, chokers have an interesting history. Chokers originated from being worn by women of ancient civilizations such as Sumer and ancient Egypt as a form of ultimate protection for the neck, head, arms, and ankles. They were described as “protective and amuletic,” according to The National Jeweler.

They were not really in style after that, and emerged again from the shadows of the ever-changing fashion industry at the end of the 19th century, worn by prominent public figures such as the Princess of Wales, later known as Alexandra of Denmark in the 1800’s and early 1900’s. They continued to bounce back and forth from stylish to not, and they have now returned once again to the wardrobes of countless people.

Found on high fashion magazine photos such as Elle and Vogue to more casual ones such as Seventeen and Glamour, chokers are everywhere. They have also made a drastic reappearance on the red carpet, sported by favorite celebrities such as Kourtney Kardashian, Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner, and even the amazing Rihanna.

Popular stores that offer bohemian-style looks such as Pacsun, Tilly’s, Urban Outfitters, and Forever 21 are selling more chokers than ever before, coming in several different shapes and sizes. These are commonly made of leather, velvet, beading, silver, and gold; and adorned with cute pendants or other designs. Many celebrities have even been interviewed for advice on how to style chokers and accommodate them to the modern 2016 lookbooks.

Around for many centuries, choker necklaces have been a major fashion staple countless times, and there is no doubt they will continue to appear on numerous #OOTD’s for many seasons to come.
