The Green Club allows students to earn service hours through participating in environmentally helpful activities, such as emptying teachers’ recycling bins.

The green club is a club at Newsome doing many beneficial things for the school and its members.

The club participates in the many activities, the most notable being the recycling program which allows its members to earn service hours through helping empty out teachers’ recycling bins.

Senior Reilly Baker enjoys the benefits of the recycling program, saying, “It is a win-win, it helps me earn service hours while keeping the school clean at the same time.”

Service hours is something the club is able to offer to its members for their work in club sanctioned activity.

Service hours were something that attracted Baker as well as Senior Mihir Patel. Baker said, “As a student with few volunteer hours this club gave me an opportunity to earn those hours while doing something good for the planet,” Patel added, “The club gets you a good amount of service hours while you keep the school clean.”

As head of the planter committee Baker is in charge of keeping the planter by the bus ramp maintained and cleaned. He is hoping to improve it as well stating, “My goal for this year is to clean up the planter and make it a dominant aspect of the school’s scenery.”

Green club is able to teach its members environmentally friendly habits that will keep with them even after they leave the club. “Even after I graduate this year I will still remember to recycle everything that I can and use the tips to keep the planet clean,” said Baker.

The club does a good job at helping the school and allowing its members to have fun at the same time. Patel said, “My favorite part of the club is that I get to help keep the school clean with some of my best friends.”

One aspect that members get to enjoy is a Super Smash Bros tournament hosted by the club. The tournament is one of Baker’s favorite things put on by the club as he said, “The Super Smash Bros tournament is a great way to interact with members of the club as a type of reward for the hard-work we put in throughout the school year.”
