MLB Breakout Candidates

Mookie Betts- As Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz near the end of their careers the Red Sox look for a star to replace them, enter Mookie Betts. Betts emerged last season as one of the best defensive center fielders in the league, with torrid speed not many balls get by him. On the offensive side Betts was the catalyst for the Boston, posting a .291 average, 23 home runs and 95 runs batted in. It was only the second year of Betts career and many analysts believe Betts could explode onto the scene this year.

Byron Buxton- If you pay any attention to the MLB you’ve most definitely heard the name Byron Buxton for the past few years. Buxton, an outfielder for the Minnesota Twins has finally reached the big leagues. Buxton was on the top of every analyst list for the best prospect in baseball for the past few years. In a small sample size last year Buxton was horrible at the plate but most expect this to be a non issue. Buxton’s defensive prowess already make him an average MLB player, if he can put it together with the bat, look out for Buxton to become a superstar.

Addison Russell- The Chicago Cubs are one of the top candidates this year to win the World Series, a lot of that banks on the performance of shortstop Addison Russell. Russell has been regarded as one of the top minor league players for a while and cubs fan hopes he takes the league by storm. As a rookie, Russell didn’t blow anyone away, but showed why he’s been such a touted prospect. Playing amazing defense and showing pop on his bat, Russell could be a critical factor to the Cubs winning their first championship since… 1908.
