Art Club Goes Crochet Crazy

The members of Art Club are hastily crocheting in preparation for the huge “yarn-bombing” event that will take place in December or January.

Yarn-bombing is the expressive action of covering a large area or furniture with crocheted or knitted pieces of fabric, in place of paint or chalk. Art Club director Ms. Tomassi has planned this event as a fun way to “decorate” Newsome and get others to take notice of Art Club’s skills and talents.

Lately, Art Club has been staying after school on Thursdays to get together and crochet. For the yarn bombing to be a success, Ms. Tomassi requires a lot of textiles, about 100 or more swatches.

The process hasn’t been easy, due to the reduced amount of Club Days this year and the lack of people coming to club meetings after school, usually due to conflicting schedules and other scenarios.

However, the members are slowly but surely getting their work done. Crocheting is a long process, requiring yarn to be looped, hooked and pulled through with the use of a crochet needle. It can take quite a long time to crochet even a medium, placemat-sized textile.

The after school meetings are paying off, though, as Ms. Tomassi has accumulated over 10 swatches thus far and is even crocheting textiles herself.

Last year, the yarn-bombing occurred but could have been more successful, as only the offices of the guidance counselors and the principal, along with a few other places in the courtyard, were yarn-bombed.
