On Wednesday, President Joe Biden signed a bill into law marking a foreign aid package for Ukraine, Israel, and the Indo-Pacific. As part of this bill, the future of TikTok was outlined either to be sold or banned in the United States.
Rest assured, there is no indication of TikTok being taken away anytime soon despite what some American users may think.
The bill laid out two options for the Chinese parent company, ByteDance. One option is to sell the app to an American company for continued use by United States citizens or to continue owning the company and accept the fact that it may be banned from the United States market. However, ByteDance has 270 days, about 9 months, to make its decision and in the meantime, the National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, says, “TikTok continues to operate as it is right now until either there is divestment or the time that you’ve referred to elapses.” Sullivan spoke this in response to a question during a press conference regarding the national ban on the app.
