This year’s award for the Oscar bait film of the year goes to Society of the Snow, 2024’s most disappointing film. The film markets itself as the “true” and “uncensored” retelling of the Andes Mountain 1972 plane incident, where a Uruguayan Rugby Team crash landed in the middle of the freezing Andes Mountain terrain. The tragedy turned into a different kind when it was made into a painfully unfaithful to the original English Hollywood blockbuster with not a single Uruguayan actor, 1993’s “Alive”. Unfortunately, “The Society Of The Snow” does only the bare minimum to depict anything worth any weight.
Filmed in the native language of the team, shot mostly in the Andes Mountains, and competently acted, one would think the film would be off to a good start. However nearly every other aspect is lacking or cliché, completely playing it safe. The violin and piano heavy soundtrack is constantly overbearing, taking the viewer out of the story. On that same note, the story is so streamlined and predictable, without any true drama or threat, that it completely falls flat. There never Is a moment of depth at any point, and it makes for a very sluggish, made-for TV feel. This, to the films ultimate doom, made the Two-and-a-half-hour runtime dreadful.
