After years of intense popularity and global renown, Costco Wholesale has finally laid their iconic churro to rest. In the wake of the loss, they have also shocked the nation with an unexpected and controversial addition to their menu: the double chocolate chip cookie. This addition, which was implemented after they halted sales of the twisted churro in early Jan., has loyal Costco customers reeling.
“I just don’t understand,” said Summer Messenger, Newsome senior and Costco enthusiast. “I don’t know why they would discontinue it,” she added. While some customers feel betrayed by the swap, others think that it was time for a change. “I never really liked their churros,” said Kallie Moore, Newsome senior and dedicated Costco customer. “They weren’t as good after Covid anyways, and you can’t go wrong with chocolate chip cookies.”
While opinions may differ, Costco has made it clear that they are standing firm in their decision to stick to the change. They have even postulated the addition of chocolate ice cream to their ice cream machines, which have been selling only vanilla and strawberry for years.
Separate from the difference in desserts, there is also the difference in price to consider. Many customers are appalled by the price of the new 750 calorie cookie. “I wouldn’t care so much if it weren’t so much more expensive,” said Messenger. The churros, which were selling for $1 and 49 cents, were cheaper than the cookies, which are selling for an entire dollar more, at $2 and 49 cents. “They’re robbing us blind,” she added. Many Costco customers share this sentiment, but unfortunately, they are left with no choice but to cope. With millions yearning for their favorite fried treat, it is clear that Costco is not looking back.
