It is spring, and what better way to spend April than with new music. While many underground bands and songwriters have announced new additions to their discographies, some of the most famous (and infamous) musicians working today are releasing records this month. This article will touch on the upcoming albums for the month of April organized by genre.
Starting off with new pop releases (omitting Taylor Swift’s “The Tortured Poets Department” for it can be found on the front page), modern indie star Maggie Rogers is set to release her latest fourth studio album, “Don’t Forget Me,” under Capitol Records on the 12th. The single of the same name can now be found on Spotify, and Rogers announced her new album to be a reflection on the lonesome heartbreaks following the demise of her past relationships. The longtime Art Pop outsider St. Vincent, known for “Rosyln” from the Twilight soundtrack, will release “All Born Screaming,” on the 26th under independent label Virgin Music Group. Girl in Red, also known as Marie Ringheim, skyrocketed into the contemporary pop scene in 2018 with her number one hit “we fell in love in october,” which is currently sitting at nearly a billion streams on Spotify. The young artist will be releasing her second Long Play (LP) “I’m Doing It Again Baby!” under Columbia Records on the 12th.
Moving on to new rock records, legendary grunge band Pearl Jam releases what so happens to ironically be its tenth record since its massively successful debut “Ten,” titled “Dark Matter,” on the 19th under Monkeywrench Records. However, these are not the only famous musicians from the 20th century releasing new records. Bruce Springsteen, Pet Shop Boys, Neil Young, and other classic artists are releasing new material. Reeling back to the present scene, Indie Rock outfit Vampire Weekend, popular for their fusion of Rock and Punk with Afro-Pop inspired by classical baroque music, will release “Only God Was Above Us,” on the fifth under Columbia records. Lastly, the most popular blues rock group of the past two decades, The Black Keys, will release “Ohio Players,” its 12th studio album under Warner Records on the fifth as well.
“The Power of the Heart,” a tribute to the late Lou Reed, Rock and Roll Legend and Hall of Fame Inductee (both under his band The Velvet Underground and as a solo musician), is set to be released on the 20th. The Various Artists featured on the cover album will include Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones, Angel Olsen, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Lucinda Williams, and more. The multi-platinum musician died in 2013 at the age of 71.
On the more niche side of the genre spectrum, leading Reggae and Psychedelia trio Khruangbin is anticipating their sixth studio album titled “A La Sala,” on the fifth. Finally, Indie folk darling Iron & Wine, is set to release his latest Americana project “Light Verse,” on the 26th, under Sub Pop Records, to close off the month of new music.
