Both the boys and girls lacrosse teams are off to blazing hot starts this season. The girls team has opened the season in dominant fashion, going 5-0 while winning these games by an average of 13.4 goals. Meanwhile, the boys are also off to a phenomenal start, going undefeated in district games to open up the season with a 5-2 record.
Both squads are hoping to improve on their impressive showings last season, as both teams advanced all the way to the regional quarterfinals before losing tightly contested games in that round. However, especially after their impressive showings early on in the season, the lacrosse teams know that the sky is the limit for their talented squads.
Especially for the girls, there is a palpable feeling that this could be the year to make a deep playoff run, as many of the players on the team have lots of experience. Junior Abby Phillips said, “This is definitely our year…to show that we can go all the way.” Senior Colleen Flood added on, “Last season obviously ended pretty rough with that game [10-9 overtime loss to Manatee High School], but we know we can compete with the best teams and we’re hungry to prove ourselves.”
The boys team is also setting their expectations sky high, or as junior Zach Gimbal put it, “This is the year we can win the whole state tournament.” While the boys have never advanced to the state finals before, they have lots of experience in the regional levels of the tournament. Gimbal went on to say, “While states is the ultimate goal, right now we’re focused on getting ready to win districts.” The team will have tight competition for districts, as the Plant Panthers lie in their way of the district championship. Last year, the Panthers defeated the Wolves in the district final on their way to an appearance in the state semifinals.
In short, these Wolves teams are in fairly similar positions, as they both fight to exceed the lofty goals they set for themselves. With the deep talent pools both teams possess and the fantastic coaching staffs, Newsome is poised for great seasons for both teams.
