The girls’ soccer team has been a force to be reckoned with year after year. This season they managed to exceed their own lofty goals, as they advanced to the final four teams in the 7A state tournament. Even though their season came to an end there with a 4-1 loss to Boca Raton, there is no question this season can only be categorized as a success for the Wolves.
The Wolves were dominant during the regular season, as they only lost one game throughout the entire regular season, including tournament play. The team’s fantastic regular season performance led to them snatching the top seed in their region, which gave them home-field advantage through the early stages of the state playoffs.
The single-elimination tournament started off with a bang for the Wolves, as they easily beat eighth seeded Lake Nona, 7-2. However, they faced a significantly tougher task with their next opponent, Stienbrenner. The Warriors played tough all game, but the Wolves managed to escape with a 2-1 win, which set up a showdown against Palm Harbour to decide who would advance to the state semifinals.
Palm Harbour has been a thorn in the side of the team for numerous years, as they have beaten the Wolves multiple times in the playoffs in previous years. Furthermore, they were responsible for the only blemish on the Wolves’ sterling regular season record, as they defeated the Wolves 3-2 early on in the year. However, the Wolves were able to get their revenge in an explosive way, as they demolished the Hurricanes by seven goals to punch their tickets to the state finals.
After their dominant showing in the playoffs, hopes were high that the Wolves would be able to keep their momentum rolling all the way to the state finals, much like the boys team did last season. However, Boca Raton was clearly a force to be reckoned with, as they cruised through the earlier stages of the state playoffs.
The Wolves were able to keep the game even for most of the first half, until the Bobcats were able to score a goal on a fast break to take the lead going into the half. This gave the Bobcats all the momentum they needed, and they were able to open up their lead even further early on in the second half.
While the Wolves kept the pressure on and played hard throughout the game, their late rally attempt fell short. However, it is clear to see that this young team has the potential to win the whole tournament sometime in the near future.
