The Supreme Court of the United States is set to have a hearing on the case disqualifying former President Donald Trump from the Colorado GOP primary ballot. The Justices have arranged to hear oral arguments on Thursday, Feb. 8.
The appealed case stems from the judging of the Colorado Supreme Court which deemed the former president ineligible to run for president, stating that he “engaged in insurrection” on Jan. 6, 2021. This violates section three of the 14th amendment which is interpreted as saying that no former U.S. official who has engaged in insurrection can hold any office under the United States.
Trump’s team appealed the decision to a higher court, with a spokesperson calling it a “14th Amendment abusing decision.” The Spokesperson also said they were “confident” the Supreme Court will “affirm the civil rights of President Trump, and the voting rights of all Americans…” In a statement to ABC News.
With Trump winning the Iowa caucus and Florida Governor Ron Desantis dropping out of the race, this decision may be a crucial factor in determining the republican candidate in the 2024 Presidential Election.
