Unified is a student-led concert in partnership with Black Student Union (BSU). BSU plays a vital part in cultivating a sense of community and advancing differences by instructive teaching within the school. It frequently organizes occasions, and activities to celebrate black culture and address significant issues. This is the first Unified concert ever, marking an important milestone within Newsome.
Alexis Graham, the BSU president, comments on the proposal of Unified. “When I first heard and saw Jeffrey’s vision I was immediately on board. The Black Student Union has grown into a group of confident and involved students since its start in 2021, and I only wish to see them thrive in the safe space we’ve created. I’m grateful for the love and support throughout this whole process that will soon be shared with the rest of the student body!”
Unified focuses on the creativity of the arts expressed through the body, that being singing and dancing. The diverse music showcases African American musicians and artists, such as Beyoncé, Travis Scott, and many more. Some students even created pieces for themselves to play and perform.
Unified Director Jeffrey Daniels, when asked what Unified could do for Newsome and for BSU, responded, “This event has the potential to expand BSU’s Community beyond the walls they have been enclosed in. These walls enclose the narrative of only black students being accepted and comfortable in the club, and even BSU events. I believe this event will expand the amount of students who would like to join the club in the years to come, as well as diversify the population of the organization.”
Many participants, such as Zahra Njogu, Bianca Morena, and Eric Fort’e expressed their excitement for this event, thankful that they are able to express themselves with confidence through their performance. Daniels, on what it means to perform in Unified, says, “This show is not a music talent show, or even a musical. This performance is an element of art that will take all viewers on a journey with the music, in terms of emotions and connection with the music choices and performers in the show. I want people to feel wanted in this school. I want everyone to feel accepted. I want everyone to believe in themselves.”
The concert will be performed on February 7th during 2nd and 3rd period meeting.
