The Newsome wolves basketball team has high expectations for this upcoming season. Coaches and student athletes alike are ready for the upcoming season during the spring season. The varsity boys team has an upcoming pre-season opener tournament consisting of several Florida high school teams in the district.
Several team members expressed their excitement, including senior Ethan Moore. Moore remarked on the success of prior seasons when he said, ”Our expectation is to go back to districts and be champions for a third year in a row which has not been done in school history, and I’m really excited about that.” The team started conditioning in October to stay in the best shape. Basketball conditioning is different from other sports. This includes quick bursts of energy, sprinting and quick changes of direction.
Unlike sports like football, basketball players play continuously throughout each half. They need to be in top physical shape to perform at their best. Players focus on the consistency of the team, while also focusing on chemistry with new teammates coming in. Communication, understanding play styles, and coordination are used on the court.
Moore says, “This season it is going to be a good new group of boys who play hard and leave it all on the court. A lot of new young people, but I believe we get better every day at practice and by the end of the year we will be tough.”
All players on the team are confident in each other’s abilities and are ready to compete. Once the official basketball season begins, we can expect an excellent display from this team. Not only is this time to show out but also to get some exposure for college teams for seniors. The first game will be on the Nov 16 road against Braden River on the road.
