A new partnership between the Tampa General Hospital and Florida Aquarium has resulted in many charitable events, but its latest one is truly amazing. This November, the aquarium did something truly special for the kids at Tampa General, and it involved robots.
Both organizations spent 50,000 dollars to invest in two “telepresence robots.” These devices were designed to guide kids through the aquarium by computer or tablet. The children who took part in this amazing experience were given this opportunity due to their unfortunate states of health. These kids who cannot take part in field trips or family vacations were given such a wonderful and memorable experience from the aquarium.
The technology allowed for a high quality virtual experience from the hospital room, with characteristics designed to make the kids feel like they were truly there. The children were able to drive the robot from bed, while voices of loved ones accompanying the robot could be heard. The cameras were positioned where the face would be on a robot, putting the viewer at a realistic perspective.
“It’s like I’m there,” says patient Gavin Benyon, quoted in an article by Tampa Bay Times. Benyon is one of many at Tampa General who’s stay has become very isolating. This opportunity has presented many factors for patients that they have not had access to. Even just a simulation of the aquarium makes the kids feel like they are truly up and out of their hospital beds.
Tampa General alludes that the final testing stage is taking place, and will officially go live in January 2024. “Some of our future plans include utilizing the Robots for educational purposes with our Hillsborough Hospital School Program.” Tampa General is also in contact with the aquarium in South Carolina to further these opportunities.
This new partnership and technology is set to brighten up the days of each child in a hospital bed. No more gloomy rooms and missing out! With this new experience, families can finally attend the aquarium together.
