There are countless interesting electives offered at Newsome, and one of the most interesting by far is the History of Rock and Roll class taught by Mr. Lefebvre. He has been teaching the class for just two years, and greatly admires the uniqueness of it.
Given how unique this class is, the curriculum is similar in that aspect. Mr. Lefebvre says that “The curriculum of the class studies the history of rock and roll decade by decade, and everything is related back to today’s modern artists. We have many creative assignments like creating your own musical festival poster and colored vinyl. It’s fun because we switch back and forth, since it’s an English honors class but also an art credit.”
Despite its name, the History of Rock and Roll is not a History class, but rather an English class. As a result, the curriculum is centered around mostly writing assignments, and some art assignments to fulfill the art credit.
Mr. Lefebvre’s favorite part about teaching this class is “Seeing the genuine interest when students learn, and figure something out; in English, it’s called an ‘aha!’ moment.”
A few things Mr. Lefebvre would like to add for students considering taking this class is that “The class is officially called ‘Lit and the Honors 2’, which is how it is shown on your schedule. It also fulfills the required art credit for graduation. It’s a fun class where we talk about music, and if that interests you, we’d love to have you.”
Mr. Lefebvre only recently started teaching the History of Rock and Roll, though despite his newness to teaching this class, he definitely has a passion for it, which shows in the way he talks about it. It seems that generally, students enjoy the class because of their genuine interest in music, and that Mr. Lefebvre facilitates this interest.
