On Nov. 3, “Fortnite” released its new season, “OG,” which was hailed as a true return to formula for the game. The game brought back the old map, which many people have clamored to return for four years.
Fans have jumped in to relive the old experience with some new enhancements, like sprinting and the “Zero Build” mode. All this, and new players that were not able to experience it before, have made “Fortnite” reach the highest player count since 2018, with over 5 million concurrent players.
Over the course of the season, the game updated every week for four weeks, with each week having brought old seasons from “Chapter 1,” starting with “Season 5” to “Season X.” In addition, the loot pool from the respective seasons returned such as planes, mechs, and other weapons. These small changes brought large amounts of players back due to the return of the cartoon and non-serious tone and atmosphere.
The “OG Pass” brought remixed versions of beloved characters with many excited about the remix of popular skins, Omega and Ragnarok, with the pass having brought a combination of the two. The pass was shorter than the usual “Battle Pass”, due to the fact that the season lasted only four weeks in comparison to the usual three months.
Fans have long complained about the staleness of “Fortnite,” with many attributing the feeling to the island not being the same as the original. The old island gave people fond memories of when they were younger, as such, many people asked for the map to stay and to keep it around due to the love and nostalgia associated with it. However, the season ended on Dec. 2, bringing a new map and new chapter to “Fortnite.”
The original “Item Shop” also returned, bringing with it remixed skins as well alongside new and returning collaborations, with one of the biggest being the return of “Stranger Things,” with Eleven being added and the old skins returning.
The starting week of the season nearly overloaded the servers, causing issues and backlash online, however, the fans were quelled when they finally got to “drop in” with their friends and relive the past and hopefully pave the way for a brighter future.
