As fall sports come into full swing, Newsome’s Swim and Dive teams make a splash into their season.
The girls’ and boys’ teams started out strong, taking place in 13 meets so far and heightening the competition.
Currently, the teams are preparing for the end-of-season championships. These include districts on October 27, regions from November 2-3, and states on November 10.
Lucia Dixon says the girls team has “mainly set their eyes on the states meet, they are either focused on making it to states or making the podium at states.”
Similarly, Tyler Stargardt says, “The boys’ team plans on winning a federal title and hopes to advance their relays to regionals. We have been continuing to work hard every day, and creating a great team atmosphere.”
In preparation, practices are held on Mondays and Thursdays at the Fishhawk Ranch Aquatic Center. Coach Shotwell and Coach Warmbier run the practice; however, the team captains have input on what the team works on during their time together.
At the moment, the teams are working to improve their techniques and times while going to smaller qualifier meets before making it up to districts. Jack Montgomery says, “Districts is when it isn’t really a team sport anymore and it’s all personal. The coaches focus on giving us the best opportunities with our current times.”
Overall, both teams are putting in the work and training hard in hopes of competing in the championships at the end of the month and making it to the larger scale events.
