After two weeks of suspense and an eventful spirit week, the time finally came. On September 29th, at Newsome’s Homecoming Football game, it was time for Homecoming King and Queen to be crowned.
Despite the torrential downpour that ensued 30 minutes into the game, the show had to go on. All court members were moved to the auditorium for the crowning to commence. Newsome’s Homecoming King and Queen winners were Eli Hiscock and Mia Olivares.
Both the King and Queen felt over the moon about this opportunity. Mia Olivares said, “It feels amazing knowing that a 3300+ student body elected me to be their queen. I love feeling so much support from Newsome, truly an honor.”
Mia Olivares is a well-rounded, friendly student here at Newsome High School. Olivares is heavily involved in many student activities. She is a part of Student Government, Senior Class Council, and holds a leadership position in 1Voice. Mia is also rigorously involved in Newsome’s Elite and Chamber Choir. She exclaimed that “The family environment that these organizations cultivate has definitely allowed me to branch out to these different circles and meet so many people.”
When “Mia Olivares” was called over the microphone, she said, “The only word that kept popping into my head the entire night was ‘wow’. I was so honored that I could continue the grand legacy of Homecoming Queens of Newsome’s past.” Mia informed that it was past Newsome Homecoming Queens that inspired her to run for Homecoming Court. She revealed, “I have looked up to so many of them because of how well rounded they are.”
Homecoming King, Eli Hiscock, felt just as honored as Mia. Hiscock said that he would describe his “first reaction as just happy. It was a joyous moment.” Eli Hiscock was on Homecoming Court during his Sophomore year and was voted on again this year. He stated, “It was awesome that I got to be a part of it multiple times.”
Eli Hiscock is extremely involved in athletics here at Newsome. He is #9 on Newsome’s Football team, which he has been a part of all four years of high school. Football has been one of Eli’s biggest passions. Hiscock added that he feels his participation on the football team helped gain him this win: “I think that anybody involved in sports will get a group of people that support them whether that be teammates or students that attend the events.”
Both Mia Olivares and Eli Hiscock are very grateful for their peers and all who support them. Their values are what make them the amazing people they are, which they plan to leave behind as their legacy. Hiscock tells others to “Just be yourself and try to brighten up everyone’s day. Don’t think you’re too cool for doing something, whatever it may be.” Olivares hopes to encourage others to “Forge your own path. The best feeling ever is not caring about what anyone else thinks, and once I learned that, I was able to live life to the fullest and be my own person.” Newsome could not have chosen more humble, well-rounded students to be their role models. Congratulations to the King and Queen!
