The cross country team has taken leaps and bounds this season, beating rival schools with ease. The team’s season started at the beginning of the year, and it has brought with it many successes and challenges. As the year continues, their season will lead them through regionals, districts, and hopefully all the way to states.
As for the coaches, each of them is in full gear to ensure every runner’s success, and a positive outlook for the team as a whole. One of them in particular is Coach Sears.
Many people may know him as a freshman biology teacher, but Coach Sears has also been the boys head cross country coach for 13 years. However he started coaching at Newsome in 2006.
Everyday he enjoys being with the athletes, many of which he has had as students in previous years. The team meets up for after school practices frequently and often stay in touch.
When asked what he appreciates most about the cross country team he said, “I think [it would have to be] the camaraderie … And to know you were a part of these kids’ lives.” A sport like this has a bond unlike any other, and he cherishes that through his years here at Newsome.
As for the season, he looks forward to all the upcoming events including district, regions, and hopefully “… all the way to states.”
The season will continue through October and conclude around the end of November, leaving Coach Sears time to enjoy another year of success for his team.
