Presidents, senators, congress members and many others in charge of the United States. are seemingly becoming older and older. While this is true with everyone, it seems that politicians may be becoming too old. But the question is, how old is too old for politicians to serve in office?
The average politician is 64 years old. However, over half of Congress is 64 years old or older. Political affiliation has no bias whenever talking about the age of politicians; Republicans and Democrats can both agree that politicians are older than they ever have been. So, should there be a maximum age limit one can serve in office?
While many may argue that older politicians have more life experience to guide the country in the right direction, when looking at politicians now, it is shown that the older they are, the more cognitive decline they are showing. As one ages, the brain undergoes subtle changes that can lead to cognitive decline. By the age of 60, cognitive decline can be prevalent in a person. With over half of Congress being over the age of 60, is it right to allow these people to run America?
For example, Mitch McConnel, an 81-year-old senate minority leader, has been showing signs of cognitive decline, freezing up while speaking and having bouts of speechlessness. Many are concerned about him being the Senate minority leader while having freeze-ups that have occurred more than once. While this may be nothing, can it be related to his old age?
The average life expectancy is 72 years. With a third of politicians this age or older, the country is at risk of not keeping people in office. While cognitive decline is one concern, death from old age can be another. Since life expectancy is continuously declining, should America continue to put politicians in office already over the life expectancy age?
While some feel politician age does not affect anyone, others feel there should be a maximum age limit. With the problems of cognitive decline and life expectancy being shorter each year, it is a risky gamble to put politicians in office over the age of 65. Citizens are becoming increasingly concerned with the allotment of putting old politicians into office.
