Newsome’s football team is jumping straight into action for a year of success. As one of the biggest sports at the school, the team started their training early as their season begins in the fall semester.
Returning from last year, the boys have their heads set high for another round of games against rival schools. High expectations for the year keep the team in check. Linebacker Eli Hiscock states, “We like to say that we play like we are 1-0 every week.” Keeping themselves disciplined allows for better performance and ensures they “… play with confidence.” Eli also said the goal for this year is “… to go undefeated for as long as [they] can.”
One big part of their routine as a team is weekly morning practices. Every Wednesday, the guys come to school at 6:00 am to get a break from the heat and for a chance to score some extra practice time. It may not seem enjoyable to wake up early in the morning before a school day, but when asking some of the players, it seemed to bring an air of positivity with it. One player in particular, Liam Shivers, said, “I feel like it only brings positive effects. Not many teams wake up this early every week and come out and perform. I feel like this gives us an edge.”
Having all this practice time compiled together, the guys prepare for the weekly Friday night games. With many exciting themes coming up including gold out, Bleed Blue, and tropical, the student body is ready to come out and show their Newsome spirit. Defensive tackle D’Wayne Bain is excited to have the support of his classmates this season, stating, “It feels good knowing that I have the student section behind me supporting what I do.”
Some would say the most exciting aspect of this football season is Newsome’s home games. Hosting rival schools allows for the student section to go all out for the team and show an outpour of support. One in particular that has many excited is the Newsome vs. Bloomingdale game, but other schools being hosted include Riverview, Durant, and Gaither.
From morning practices to Friday night games, the Newsome football team starts off the season with a bang. Let’s hope for another year of success for the boys.
