Blue Beetle, DC’s newest feature film, released on Aug. 18 to positive reception. This movie has sparked renewed hope within the fanbase for superhero movies with its original comedy and heartfelt story.
The film follows Jeime Reyes as he discovers an ancient artifact called the Scarab. The Scarab chooses Reyes to become its host and he becomes the superhero Blue Beetle. He must adjust to his new life as a superhero and keep up with his life as an ordinary kid while making sure his family and friends stay safe.
The movie has been rated 6.7 from IMDb and has a 78 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. The community feedback, however, has been mostly positive, with the movie having a 92 percent user rating on Google.
The last DC film, The Flash, did not receive nearly as much praise, thanks in part to the Flash’s actor, Ezra Miller, having been in controversy earlier in the year. Still, people said that The Flash was a cheap money grab with lazy writing and old actors for the sake of nostalgia. However, with Blue Beetle, people loved the story and the lack of repeating actors from previous DC films and famous actors that would be extremely well known.
A major critique of the movie industry is the excessive use of special effects for their movies, with people joking that all actors have to do is stand in front of a green screen and the visual effects artists will do the rest. While Blue Beetle is no different, it really allows its actors to show their skill, especially Reyes’s actor, Xolo Maridueña.
People also love the representation in the movie, with Jaime being Latin American. The movie makes light hearted jokes about the Latin American lifestyle and cultural stereotypes about them.
Blue Beetle has become a new paragon in the superhero film business, with people loving it. Fans everywhere are hoping that both Marvel and DC learn from this and begin to go back to their old glory.
