The Truth Behind Magic: Misunderstanding of the Spiritual Community

Trisha Bedford, Reporter

Witchcraft began long ago before even reading and writing were forms of communication. There are many different conflicting views on witchcraft as a whole. The burning of witches in Salem was not the first execution tactic within this group; extinction techniques were attempted as far back as 743, when the act was deemed a crime by the Synod of Rome. This misconception of witchcraft has brought a negative light on this group that leads to a heavy misunderstanding of its people and values.

Getting the elephant in the room out of the way, “Is witchcraft led by the devil?” No, it is not. People of any religion can practice the spiritual belief system of a witch. While there are religions based upon the belief system of the witchcraft community, they are not the same, and still do not worship the devil. Witchcraft by itself is a spiritual belief system unbeholden to a specific religion. This means any (or even many) gods, goddesses or deities can be one’s outlet of spirituality.

Nature is a leading factor in all spiritual beliefs. Connecting to trees, grass and even animals is the beginning to the world of spirituality. The most known common use of the earth in witchcraft is the use of crystals. Crystals are used to connect even deeper with the earth. Every crystal has its own vibration which creates its healing factors.

Crystals are not the only thing used to create a deeper connection to the earth. Herbs and flowers are also used to enhance that connection. Most herbs have medical healing abilities when used correctly, and, just like crystals, can affect mental health and good karma. The use of herbs has been around forever, even dating back to the use of ancient medicine. Common examples include ginger, being used as a natural nausea suppressant, and lavender, helping the mind shut off for peaceful sleep.

The magic performed by witches is also not as foreign as one may think. Having ever wished for something, good or bad, is a performance of magic. Even the act of cursing at someone who has brought on negative emotions is a form of magic.
