Newsome students love to participate in their school sports, however which one is their favorite? Students have debated between six of the Newsome winter sports; winter guard, soccer, volleyball, basketball, wrestling, cheerleading and track.

Students went back and forth between the pros and cons of each sport. They ultimately ranked cheerleading as first and basketball as second. Wrestling, winter guard, soccer all tied for third and volleyball was fourth. Sadly, nobody voted for track as their favorite winter sport

Cheerleading is a dynamic sport that incorporates many different techniques to complete a routine. This includes jumps, tumbling, stunting and execution.

Many of the Newsome students enjoyed this sport because it is entertaining to watch and it allows people to embrace school spirit.

People also loved that it is a team sport in which the athletes have to work together to accomplish a common goal..

“I like cheerleading the most because I was a cheerleader for about nine years. I started when I was seven and stopped at the age of 16. I made so many friends and it makes you closer with people I never thought I would be friends with,” said junior Riley Polen.

Basketball at Newsome is also a big deal. It came in second place because so many students love going to the basketball games and cheering on their school.

This sport teaches how to be a strong team player. Many students who play basketball  bond with others, giving it a special place in their hearts.

Students also love the creativity of the sport. Its rules leave a way for people to personalize the sport and give it their own flare. For example, the shooting form of a player is not set. They can try and score however they deem fit.

With wrestling, people enjoy it because it allows you to watch 1v1. They like that they are not having to focus on a bunch of different aspects and can just focus on what’s in front of them.

“Wrestling is very interesting because it’s a 1v1 sport and you’re very close to someone so you’re able to tell alot about that person- you can tell if they’re a risk taker, how stressed they are, how refined their skills are, and how emotionally invested they are. That makes it really interesting. A conversation that uses no words,” said junior Jacob Dudjak.

Winter guard is one of the most entertaining performance sports to watch. It has a lot of dynamics that draw people’s eyes, such as flags and sabers.

As for soccer, lots of people love the aspect of fluidity. They like that it is cohesive and doesn’t stop unless absolutely called for.

Volleyball is also an amazing sport. It is fun to watch because the team works together under one goal. Students love the aspect of competitiveness as well as teamwork in this sport.

There are so many great sports to choose from at Newsome. As for winter sports, the students enjoy cheerleading the most, and then basketball, followed by wrestling, winterguard and volleyball.
