Autumn Entertainment for Scaredy-Cats
October 26, 2021
Spooky season is upon us and many people are looking forward to the many things that autumn has to offer. Most likely due to COVID there will be less trick-or-treaters on the streets and no house parties, leaving people looking for alternative entertainment. Furthermore, some people are completely petrified of the spooky elements of the spooky season. So, this will help elucidate on some non-scary alternatives.
Holiday movies are some of the most popular activities of the season but not everyone has the stomach for iconic films like “The Conjuring”, “The Evil Dead” but still want that feeling of rustling leaves and howling; films such as “Fantastic Mr. Fox”, “Frankenweenie”, “The Addams Family” and “Beetlejuice” are all good substitutes that help invoke the feeling of Fall without all of the gore and frights.
My personal Favorite Fantastic Mr. Fox by Wes Anderson is composed entirely of warm tones, as if the story took place in fall all year round. Based on the novel by Roald Dahl, a clever fox lives with his wife ,son and nephew who is visiting due to his father contracting double pneumonia . By instinct Mr. Fox begins stealing from Boggis, Bunce, and Bean- the meanest, nastiest, ugliest farmers in the history of the valley. The local human children even sing a rhyme about them “Boggis, Bunce and Bean, one fat one short, one lean. These horrible crooks so different in looks were nonetheless equally mean!” Finally, tired of being outwitted by Mr. Fox the farmers attempt to capture and kill him. The rest of the movie is very well executed with humor for children and parents alike, transporting you to a fall fantasyland for the entire film.
In the movie Frankenweenie, Victor Frankenstein is a science nerd and outsider at school, but he does have one good friend- his dog, Sparky. Tragedy strikes and sparky is hit by a car, But through a powerful experiment Victor is able to bring sparky back to life, Victor hides sparky in the attic but the weird Edgar sees the dog in the garden and blackmails Victor to learn how to bring the dead back to life!
While the holidays are coming up and it is usually a time to get together, it is important to remember that during this pandemic unnecessary risks not only affect you but everyone else around you ,whether it be a loved one or a stranger you come into contact with. People can still enjoy each other’s company but is it absolutely imperative that we follow the guidelines of the experts if there is any hope to overcome this.
