The Umbrella Academy is a TV show that is based on a comic book written by Gerald Way, which was first released by Dark Horse Comics in 2007. 

   The TV show began filming in 2019 and currently has two seasons on Netflix. The show takes place at various times, from 2019 to the 1960s. However, the show is centered around the year 1989, where 43 infants are unexpectedly born from women who had not been pregnant on the morning they gave birth.  

   Seven of these infants were adopted by a billionaire by the name of Sir Reginald Hargreeves. He also owns an Umbrella company which he is shown buying in the late first season, helping him to establish the Umbrella Academy. 

   Each kid has a special talent or power which they must learn to control and use to go on missions in times of emergencies, like bank robberies. 

   These seven kids are raised in an academy in San Francisco, California, where they are under the care of the billionaire and a mongoose named Pogo. These seven children are played by Elliot Page (Vanya Hargreeves), Tom Hopper (Luther Hargreeves), David Castaneda (Diego Hargreeves), Emmy Raver-Lampman (Allison Hargreeves), Robert Sheehan (Klaus Hargreeves), Adam Gallagher (Number five), and Justin H. Min (Ben Hargreeves). 

     From the beginning, Ben Hargreeves, one of the seven children, is already introduced as dead, but he can be seen at various times in the series next to his brother Klaus, whose talent is talking to the dead. For many people, Klaus provides much comedic relief to this intense, action-oriented TV show.  

   The show revolves around the disappearance of one of the siblings, Number Five, who disappeared at an early age. Number Five’s special talent is the ability to time travel, and early on it shows how his ability to time travel got him stuck in the future. While he is stuck in the future, he discovers a catastrophic event will occur: the apocalypse. However, he has no way to return to the present. 

   Eventually he finds his way back to the present and is faced with trying to stop the apocalypse. He begins to track down the purpose of the apocalypse, with the partial help of some family members.  

   This intriguing show also includes a timeless organization, which is notably recognized by “The Handler,” a woman who time travels to find recruits for her organization. The unnamed organization uses suitcases to allow recruits to time travel, because their mission is to protect the timeline at all costs, and ensure that whatever is supposed to happen, happens. 

   Some confusion has stirred since the person who plays Vanya Hargreeves, recently became transgender, but is still signed on to play Vanya Hargreeves for the following season. With a third season coming soon, fans are not sure what to expect.
