The Greatest Baseball Game in Tampa Bay Rays History
January 27, 2021
In a typical Major League Baseball season, 162 games are played and every game counts. Teams can slip up once and ruin their chances of winning it all. In 2011 the Tampa Bay Rays were one game away from going big or going home.
The infamous game 162 night of the 2011 postseason is still brought up by fans and players everywhere. It is dubbed as one of the greatest nights in baseball. The night was filled with suspense, sadness, hope, happiness, and pain. Many teams were already out of the contention for postseason baseball, and the Rays wanted in on that action. The only way to prove their worth? Eliminating the Yankees from the exact same position.
On Wednesday, September 28th, 2011, the Rays took the field at home inside Tropicana Field. Fans pack the stands to see a matchup of David Price and Dellin Betances. Price was a few years into his career. He was the Rays go-to guy in big-game situations. Betances on the other hand was called up only the week before. He had only made one appearance for the Yankees earlier that week.
The Yankees struck early in the first inning after Robinson Cano reached on an error allowing Curtis Granderson to score. It only got worse for the rays from there. In the second inning, Price began to crumble. He gave up 4 runs on a grand slam hit by Mark Teixeira making the game 5-0 Yankees.
Price would continue to pitch until the 4th inning when he gave up another home run to Teixeira resulting in the Yankees leading 6-0.
The Rays decided to entrust the ball to Juan Cruz in the 5th inning. He would get the first out but immediately give up a home run to Andruw Jones. The Rays were declared blown out in the 6th with the score being 7-0 Yankees.
Nothing would come of either team until the bottom of the 8th inning. The Yankees placed Boone Logan into the game. It would not be long until Tampa Bay would finally strike. After giving up a few hits and hitting a batter. The Rays found themselves fighting back. With the score being 7-3 the all-star face of the Rays Evan Longoria stepped into the box. The moment the fans have waited for all night happened. Longoria hits a three-run home run to make the game within one. There was still hope.
The bottom of the 9th quickly started. This was the Rays last chance at tying the game for a chance to win. The rays were down to their final out. The Rays manager Joe Maddon made a risky move in an attempt to tie the game. He put in Dan Johnson. Johnson has not yet played a full season in the majors. But this was his chance to be a hero. With the rays down to their final strike of the 2011 Season, Johnson rips one down the line just staying fair hitting the foul pole in right field. It has happened the rays have tied the game.
Extra innings would go on until the 12th inning. Both teams were still tied at seven apiece. The Rays needed another big hit to win it all. Once again Longoria stepped up to the plate. Longoria battled at the plate he took one look at the pitcher and ripped a ball down the left-field line just clearing the short wall. Longoria has done it and the Rays have secured a spot in the postseason making a miraculous comeback in the 8th inning.
The final day of the 2011 regular season had many games and many moments. But nothing will beat the Ray comeback against the Yankees.
