Guys React to the “F” Word (Feminism)
April 6, 2016
A new “f word” has arose in Newsome High School. Feminism, an incredibly misunderstood word, is controversial and something not all guys or all girls support. The definition is plain and simple, the belief that women and men should be treated equally in all aspects of life. Some people believe this has already been achieved, others do not. While a fair amount of girls are openly against feminism, the majority of those against the idea are guys.
Feminism is almost equivalent to profanity in schools, Newsome especially. Not one male student interviewed said “yes” when first asked if they were a feminist. Senior Sean Behrens said “in certain ways”. Behrens goes further into detail saying, “I had to watch a video for Mrs. King’s class and it made me see things differently.”
The first word that comes to junior Jared Blanchard’s head when he hears the word feminism is “overdone”. “I think it’s a valid argument and some things about it are necessary but a lot of it is overdone,” he explains. “I don’t understand why people are trying to make genders equal because I believe they already are,” sophomore Jack Lewis says.
“The modern day connotation of feminism implies that women are not already equal to men, which I do believe,” Lewis says. Senior Robert Fisher guesses he considers himself a feminist. “I believe men and women should have equal rights,” Fisher says. “Heck no,” senior Kyle Lansky says on whether he considers himself a feminist. “I feel like the radical feminists of Newsome High school degrade men instead of equalizing men and women,” Lansky explains.
Senior Roberto Pupillo is not a feminist either. “Once they are treated the exact same men are treated, I feel like they will be upset with that because I feel like they are privileged and they don’t really realize that,” Pupillo says.
“I support feminism,” Shea McCafferty states. He also believes that women have equal rights for the most part. Freshmen Payne Norris is not a feminist but said he didn’t realize what the definition of the word really was. While most male students are extremely against the idea, some might not know the meaning or thoughts behind it and some just might not care. “If that offends you then go complain to your twelve twitter followers that care,” Lansky simply puts.
