A master in the pool and a force on the gridiron; best buddies member Steven Springer has quickly taken Newsome by storm.

However, Springer has faced his share of adversity along the way. A mild learning disability placed him in Best Buddies halfway through his sophomore year, but he did not let this slow him down in the classroom or on the field. He works hard to maintain good grades in addition to playing varsity football and competing on the varsity swim team.

Springer is a key member of the Varsity swim team, competing in three different events.  His hard work was rewarded this year as he was elected as the team captain.  “I was surprised but it was an honor to be the captain and lead my team this season,” Springer said.

His football teammates agree that he is a hard worker and makes great contributions to the team. While Springer is not allowed to actually play like he does in swim, he dresses in full gear, helmet and all, for practice everyday and is always there to help out the team with water and equipment.

Quarterback Cole Schaller said, “Steven’s very dedicated.  He’s out there putting in work everyday with the rest of us which is a huge inspiration.” Tight End Jake Huelsman added, “Springer’s the man, he comes out there everyday fired up and ready to go.”

It’s clear that Springer has had a great impact on his teammates this season, but his senior year wasn’t always easy.  Things got off to a rough start when he suffered a broken arm in practice during Fall camp.  He went up against starting Center Landen Turner in a tackling drill and found out later that day that he had suffered a fracture in his forearm.

A setback like this can often be devastating, but Steven was very positive about the situation.  He was unable to dress out for practice for over three weeks, but he showed up everyday with a smile and contributed in any way he could.

“At first it was sad.  My family went to tears when we found out,” Springer continued, “but I recovered fast and when I came back out Coach Hiscock and I agreed that it was time for the comeback.”  And just like that, Springer was back where he belonged.  Making plays on the field and in the pool.

Senior receiver Drew Willis said it best, “He’s truly just a Newsome legend. He’s a great athlete and a great guy.”  Here’s to a continued year of success for the one and only, Steven Springer.
