NFL: Top Three Through Week Three

The wait is over! After a long, depressing offseason, the sport we live for is back. Through week three these are the top teams in the league.

3) Arizona Cardinals- The Cardinals are repeating last seasons early success with great play by QB Carson Palmer.  Their defense is performing at a high level, which has led them to a 3-0 start. The Cardinals were 6-0 last year before Palmer went down with an ACL tear, the offense was abysmal without him. Through three weeks Palmer hasn’t been hindered by his injury at all throwing for 803 yards, 9 touchdowns with a 63.6 completion percentage. He has also been efficient, only turning the ball over twice. Longtime Cardinal and future hall of famer Larry Fitzgerald has found the fountain of youth, exploding onto the scene after a few down years. Fitzgerald is tied for the league lead in touchdown receptions with 5. If Fitzgerald keeps this up, Arizona’s quest for a super bowl will be much easier. Another veteran crucial to the Cardinals success is former Tennessee Titan, Chris Johnson. After being one of the only players to rush for 2,000 yards in a season, Johnson disappeared. He has reemerged with a strong showing early in the season with 219 yards, and 2 touchdowns. Arizona is off to a great start, averaging 42 points a game, thanks to multiple touchdowns by the defense. The defense is allowing just 16.2 points per game, which ranks them at third in the NFL for points allowed. Free safety Tyrann Mathieu also known as the “Honeybadger” and star cornerback Patrick Peterson form an exceptional secondary that opposing quarterbacks dread throwing against.

2) Green Bay Packers- Aaron Rodgers, simple as that… In reality there is much more, but Aaron Rodgers is the reason why the Packers are in super bowl contention every year. Last years MVP is handling business as usual as the Packers are 3-0 and Rodgers is playing phenomenal. Rodgers hasn’t turned the ball over once, as usual, while also throwing for 10 touchdowns with a solid 771 yards. Even without star wide receiver, Jordy Nelson (who went down for the year with an ACL tear) the offense continues to roll. Pro Bowler Randall Cobb has replaced Nelson effectively, catching 3 touchdowns against the Chiefs in week 3. James Jones has returned to Green Bay after being cut twice this offseason and has produced with 4 touchdowns and 219 yards. Star running back Eddie Lacy had a solid first game against rival Chicago Bears, but an ankle injury has slowed him down, so expect Green Bay’s offense to be even better when he gets healthy. The Packers run defense poses a concern, but overall they’re a pretty good defense led by veteran Clay Matthews.

1) New England Patriots- After an offseason surrounding controversy and Deflategate, the Patriots have responded, coming out with a point to prove. Last year’s super bowl champions are led by future hall of famer Tom Brady. Brady is making a strong run at MVP. Through three weeks the Patriots are 3-0 and Brady has thrown for 9 touchdowns, and a whopping 1,112 yards with no turnovers. After losing running back Shane Vereen, some analyst thought the Patriots would have a hard time replacing him. That has not been the case as journeyman Dion Lewis has stepped into the role and thrived with the eighth most all purpose yards in the NFL. At wide receiver the Patriots are missing Brandon LaFell until week seven but has made no difference thus far. Wide receiver Julian Edelman is off to a great start with 279 yards, and 2 touchdowns; but Edelman’s strength is moving the chains.  He currently has 30 receptions, the second most in the NFL. New England’s main form of offense is All-Pro Rob Gronkowski, also known as Gronk. The tight end is one of the most unstoppable players in the NFL. Gronkowski has 16 receptions, the third most of all tight ends, but he leads the position in yards with 308 and also has 4 touchdowns. On defense the Patriots rely on Pro Bowl free safety Devin McCourty, and young star linebackers Jamie Collins and Dont’a Hightower.
