A Sadie Hawkins Dance is a dance in which societal gender norms are refashioned, with girls asking the guys to the dance rather than guys asking the girls. The dance is usually an informal event held by high schools to have a twist on the traditional boy-ask-girl formality.
The first known Sadie Hawkins dance was held in 1938, which introduced the idea that women could ask men to be their dates without waiting around.
Newsome High School will be hosting its own Sadie Hawkins dance this year on Feb. 17 from 7:30 PM to 10:30 PM. Nancy Ohme, a teacher at Newsome High School, says, “ Sadie Hawkins is a school-wide dance where the girls ask the guys. It’s a less formal dance, but anyone can come, and you don’t have to have a date.”
All Newsome students are encouraged to attend the event. However, the event will not allow outside guests. The dance will be held in the Drivers Ed parking lot, and students will enter the student parking lot, then check in at the cafeteria.
Newsome is offering many activities at the dance, such as games and places to take pictures. A Chick-fil-A sandwich with a drink and snacks will also be provided to all students who buy tickets. The theme for the Dance is Western, but DJ Ron will be playing all types of music.
“I think a Sadie Hawkins dance is a pretty cute idea. I like that girls ask the guys for a change because it’s always been the opposite, and I bet most girls wish they could just ask the guy to a dance, but instead they have to wait on the guy,” said Raynee Chester, a sophomore at Newsome High School.
Kaylee King, a senior at Newsome High School, agrees, ”A Sadie Hawkins Dance is a good idea because it gives the girls a chance to reach out where they might not usually do so.”
Newsome held a Sadie Hawkins Dance pre-covid, and they are now deciding to bring it back. “Grad Bash and bus rentals have increased in price. Prom rental venues have increased, too. Sadie Hawkings will help offset the expense of these events along with funding the senior breakfast and sunset,” says Ohme.
The dance is being presented by the class of 2024. Tickets will cost $30, cash only, and will be sold during lunches from Feb. 1 to Feb. 9. Enjoy the event!
