This year, several books have made their way onto the big screen as movie/TV adaptations. Everyone knows that the book is usually better than the movie, so here are some adaptations you should keep your eye out for before you delve into them.

“There’s Someone Inside Your House.” This book to movie adaptation will be on Netflix sometime in 2021. The book by Stephanie Perkins is a suspenseful thriller. It takes place in Nebraska as a mysterious serial killer is targeting teens. Makani Young leaves her home in Hawaii to settle with her grandmother, leaving her difficult past behind. But as the serial killer takes more lives, Makani is faced with the threat of her dark past making her a target.

“Dune.” This science-fiction novel by Frank Herbert is being reimagined into a film being released on Oct. 1. The plot follows Paul Atreides, a gifted boy living in the midst of a feudal interstellar society. House Atreides is the ruling family of the society but as they are threatened, Paul must travel some of the most dangerous lands in order to gain safety for his people. HBO Max will have the newest adaptation when it premieres, which will star people like Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya.

“The Selection.” This series by Kiera Cass is marketed as “The Bachelor” set in a fantasy world. A group of 35 lower-class girls get the chance to compete for the heart of Prince Maxon. Marriage with him would grant the lucky girl life of glittering jewels and wealth. America Singer reluctantly makes her way through the competition, but as it goes on, she finds her heart torn between Prince Maxon and the boy she secretly loved back home. Netflix green-lit the adaptation for the first book of the series in 2020, although details have not been released about when exactly it will be released this year.

“Shadow and Bone.” This series by Leigh Bardugo was released on April 23 as an eight-episode season on Netflix. The plot follows Alina Starkov, an orphan who finds out that she has powers that could possibly save Ravka, the nation she lives in. Ravka is threatened by the Shadow Fold, a conglomeration of darkness and monsters. With Alina’s dormant powers becoming alive for the first time, the nation sets their hopes on her helping them. She is taken away from her mundane life to the lavish royal court to be trained to become a part of the magical elite called the Grisha. But as her time there continues, she discovers that this new life is not what she thought it would be.
