The use of crystals for spiritual purposes can be traced back to ancient civilizations, such as Egypt, Greece and even Mesopotamia. Throughout history, these cultures have utilized crystals for healing; although its popularity died down, it has surged once again in the mid-20th century and is still prominent in many lives today. This may be a result of how much stress the contemporary world places on people, but no matter the case, crystals prove an important resource of healing for anyone seeking spiritual growth.

First and foremost, it is important to understand that utilizing crystals for their spiritual properties does not mean one has to neglect science; crystals have vibrational frequencies that affect the energy fields around them. Quantum physics presents the idea that everything has energy or vibrations. Crystals have a higher vibration than humans, which is where the power in their healing properties lies; this is due to entrainment, which is a term that describes the phenomena of how two vibrational systems affect each other so that they move synchronously. When crystals raise one’s vibration, mental, emotional and spiritual progress becomes much easier.

For a spiritual skeptic, understanding how and why crystals are utilized is integral to being able to use them. Being too critical and overanalyzing it, however, may reduce its effects. Think of it as blocking the crystals’ vibrations. The intention is important when using crystals, but that really goes for anything even outside of spiritual practices. It is similar to a placebo situation; if one believes that crystals will them, that will more than likely be their experience. This is because the crystals’ vibration attempts to match their users’.

Crystals have six lattice patterns: hexagonal, which aids in manifestation; isometric, which amplifies energy; monoclinic, which provides protection; orthorhombic, which is for cleansing; tetragonal, used to attract something; and triclinic, used to ward off or keep certain energy. One could use a crystal’s basic shape to suit their spiritual needs, as well as its color. Just like a crystal’s lattice pattern, its color plays a part in its properties as well.

The color of a crystal is formed from how it absorbs light, its chemical makeup and its impurities. For example, black crystals are strongest when it comes to protection and grounding. Pink is great for themes of love and kindness.

The most essential crystal is clear quartz. It can work and match any energy, which also means it can function as a substitute for other crystals. It can also be used as an amplifier when paired with another crystal. Once again, consider a black crystal and its protecting properties. If one wanted to use such a crystal for the purpose of protecting themselves from negative energy, they could pair it with a clear quartz crystal to amplify this intention.

Other common and arguably essential crystals include, but are most certainly not limited to, smoky quartz, citrine, amethyst, rose quartz, carnelian and black tourmaline. However, there are so many crystals to choose from and some may be more attracted to certain crystals than others, so the importance of specific crystals is subjective.

When it comes to collecting and/or using crystals, one does not necessarily need to be able to identify each and every crystal they have come across or used. However, knowing the names of crystals can come in handy when using them for specific purposes. For example, one may like rose quartz because its appearance simply attracts them, so they utilize it for general emotional or spiritual healing without ever knowing its identification. Another person may use it for healing love relationships because they know rose quartz specializes in love.

Crystals can be used in a variety of ways; one can meditate with them, put them in their bathtub while they bathe or bury them in plant’s soil to promote growth. The list is endless. However, the most important thing to remember is that crystal usage should never be substituted for modern science. Though some say to have sore throats or headaches healed by crystals, it is crucial to seek the help of a medical professional when faced with a physical issue. Crystals are often better for healing mental and emotional states, not physical ailments.

Crystals are excellent resources for balancing the mind and body and progressing one’s spiritual self. As minerals come straight from the earth, they prove powerful for those seeking their healing properties.
