The 2020 Oscars

The 2020 Oscars premiered this Sunday, Feb. 9 and shocked many audience members and viewers. Some of the Oscars such as Best Original Song, Best Production Design and Best Adaptation did not surprise anyone; Best Song went to Elton John for “(I’m gonna) Love Me Again”, Best Production Design was given to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Best Adaptation was received by Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit.

Many actors, directors, and producers who received an award thanked their work crews and loved ones; however, some winners spoke some memorable lines. Parasite’s creator Bong-Joon Ho was so shocked by his movie’s four Oscars that he was “very ready to drink tonight.” Joaquin Phoenix awarded Best Actor for his work in The Joker, gave a very long speech about reasons for filming movies, egocentrism dominating humans and ended with a lyric from his brother, “Run to the rescue with love and peace will follow.”

Most Oscars were awarded front runners in mind; Best Picture was a historic achievement for South Korean film Parasite that beat out The Joker, Jojo Rabbit, Ford v Ferrari, 1917, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, The Irishman, Marriage Story, and Little Women. This drama laced with mystery was spoken in another language and yet still managed to touch enough viewers to win Best Picture. Parasite is the first international film to ever receive the Best Picture Oscar and will be remembered in history.

From the red carpet to the stage, the 92nd Oscars was an event worth watching.
