Don’t be fooled by joint Korea during the Winter Olympics

The 2018 Winter Games are almost half way through, and there have been multiple people praising North and South Korea for marching together during the opening ceremonies and having a joint women’s hockey team. While other people are praising this move, I am questioning it.

North Korea sent a group of cheerleaders to cheer the hockey team (who went 0-3 and scored just one goal, before being eliminated), on the surface it seems normal, because of course there would be fans to cheer this team on. But in an interview with businessinsider.com, a former member of the “Army of Beauties”, who had escaped North Korea and lives in South Korea, said that the they were only at the Olympics as a “form of propaganda”.

She went on to talk about how the group was separated from the rest of their people and had to go through psychological training, “We were told we should not be surprised or shocked by another world. In particular, the training’s focus was that we shouldn’t forget our home country, not even for a minute. And we also shouldn’t forget that we were there to honor General Kim [Jong Un].” She then said, “We were not just there to cheer, but we were told to go into the heart of the enemy.”

These people praising North Korea is just what Kim Jong Un wanted, to seem like he was trying to create peace between the two countries who have had tensions since the Korean War which ended in 1953. When in reality, he is doing the same kind of things he has always done. His citizens aren’t even allowed to watch the Olympics. He is still the leader who threatens to wage nuclear war on not only South Korea but the United States. He is using this team as a PR stunt to seem likable when he is still starving his citizens and murdering anyone who speaks out against his regime.

The Olympics are a time for the world to come together, while North and South Korea did that, it is the motives of why North Korea did it that should worry not only Americans, but the rest of the world.
