Turkish Tragedy

Monday was a very tragic day for dozens of families living in a village near the Manas airport in Kyrgyzstan. Turkish cargo jet Boeing 747 crashed on the outskirts of the capital, Bishkek. Killing 37 people upon impact and injuring many more, the crash caused six children to be hospitalized, according to CBS News.

Minister Kubatbek Boronov said that over half of the houses in the village have been torn down due to the terrible incident.  He also stated that although the direct cause of the wreck is not officially clear, it was likely as a result of both human error and bad weather in the area.

Although ‘bad weather’ did include thick fog and mist leading to poor visibility when the plane fell, it was reported that other planes had landed at Manas before the crash just fine, which will open an investigation.

Clouds of smoke rose in the area and mudbrick buildings were brought down by parts of the plane.

Victims included not only the residents on the ground, but also the crew of the plane, according to the Emergency Situations Ministry. ACT Airlines, a cargo company based from Istanbul, reported that all four of their crew members were killed. The plane had left from Hong Kong and was expected to land in Istanbul hours later.

Local Andrei Andreyev explained how initially, residents thought they were experiencing an earthquake, “around seven o’clock in the morning I heard a strong swat (noise) and after that all the nearest houses were shaken.”

Deputy Prime Minister Mukhammetkaly Abulgaziyev said in a report that over a thousand rescue helpers were at the scene of the crash.

Boeing expressed support with an email statement that included “A Boeing technical team stands ready to provide assistance at the request and under the direction of government investigating authorities,” according to CNN.

Our deepest condolences to those who were injured by the crash.
