The NFC North: who will take the division?

Joseph Espy, Reporter

After a chaotic few weeks, the NFC North, one of the NFL’s most competitive divisions, is up for grabs.

Just three weeks ago the Minnesota Vikings went into their bye week as the last unbeaten team in the NFL despite not having their starting quarterback Teddy Bridgewater and star running back Adrian Peterson.

The Green Bay Packers weren’t far behind with a respectable 4-2 record while the Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears fell behind with records of 3-3 and 1-5 respectively. The NFC North appeared to be a two team race, something common in recent years.

Since the bye, however, the Vikings defense has been abysmal and the team has failed to close out winnable games, resulting in a four-game losing streak. The Packers have been equally disappointing as the defense has been virtually non-existent, while the run game has been almost extinct since the loss of starter Eddie Lacy.

Shocking losses to the Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans puts the Packers at 4-5, showing some changes might need to be made to keep Green Bay in contention. In one of the more remarkable stories in the NFL, the Detroit Lions sit tied for first place in the NFC North at 5-4 despite trailing in the fourth quarter of every game.

The Lions have won all five of their games coming from behind with under two minutes remaining. Despite the great comebacks and quarterback Matthew Stafford’s re-emergence, Detroit will need to ultimately find consistency to win the division, because playing from behind every game is a recipe for disaster.

Finally, the Chicago Bears sit at 2-7 and out of the playoff race. Despite the rough record, the Bears have blocked well up front, resulting in the emergence of rookie running back Jordan Howard, who already has four 100-yard rushing games. Although quarterback play has been disappointing this season, Chicago will still rely on veteran Jay Cutler to power the offense down the stretch.

With three teams in legitimate contention for the division crown in the NFC North, the second half of the NFL season is poised to be an exciting ride.
