Veterans Day Celebrations

Carolina Fernandez, Reporter

November eleventh holds a much greater symbolic meaning than most believe, and while everyone will enjoy a day off from school or work, the real reason we have the day off is to honor U.S Veterans.

Newsome’s clubs have done so in many different ways; throughout the past week they have been planning a way to thank all seventeen retired U.S Military Veterans who are currently part of Newsome’s staff.

H.O.T. club, formerly LEO Club, had seventeen members sign up to write special thank you notes to all veterans, and they were delivered to them on Thursday.

The Military Veterans Support Club led by Ms. Heeps made a very nice gesture. Ms. Heeps said that they “delivered yellow roses to all veterans and a thank you card to veterans on staff” on Wednesday.
Rho Kappa, the social studies honor society is making posters with the veterans’ names and in what branch of the military they were in, which will be placed on each respective teacher’s door.

Several events are also taking place throughout the state to celebrate the date. St. Augustine is having events all throughout the weekend of the 11th. On Friday, there will be a Grand Parade to honor all veterans and members who continue to serve for our country. The city has a long military history, and these events will reflect that, starting at the heart of downtown St. Augustine.

Miami is having 15 events in the city, from wreath-laying ceremonies to special services held to honor veterans, according to The Miami Herald.

Several companies are having discounts for military members who can show a valid ID. Chipotle offers a BOGO (buy one get one free) on Friday at their Bloomingdale location. Also, Legoland, the theme park resort in Winter Haven, offers a free admission as well as fifty percent discount for the people accompanying veterans.

THANK YOU VETERANS!!!
