Us vs Mother Nature: Tips to Survive the Storm

Andrea Skvarova, Entertainment Reporter

Right before Labor Day weekend, Florida faced Hurricane Hermine and the weather it brought along. It’s understandable during hurricane season, June 1 to November 30, to have some of these hit us, but Hillsborough County took quite a great hit that led to two days of school to be cancelled.

“It must have been pretty strong to have to cancel school” Sophomore Takeshi Moral stated, seeing how great measures were taken. “I wasn’t fully prepared for it.” Many others in the area faced the same problem of being caught off-guard by Hurricane Hermine, but in a state where hurricanes can be a major issue, like Hurricane Katrina was in 2005, its best that you prepare for the worst that mother nature can throw at you.

One of the most important things that you will need in a hurricane or any other dangerous situation is water. Of course it isn’t new knowledge to anyone that water is a basic need for any human, but during the hurricane season it is especially important to have many packs of water for drinking or cleaning.

You should also plan on getting canned foods or other non-perishable food products to have for when a hurricane comes. Make sure you have enough to last your household a week or so. When the power goes out in your house, you won’t have the ability be to heat anything in the microwave or the oven, so those canned foods will help you to make it through the day.

Even with the basic needs down, it will still be hard to do very much when you’re stumbling around in the dark in some rooms. To solve this, buy some packs of batteries of each kind for items like flashlights to light up the area and portable radios to hear for whether it is safe in your area yet.

Getting through hurricane season is easier said than done since weather can be unpredictable at times, but getting prepared before something goes wrong will make your life much easier during the storm.
