Super Smash: Inside the Brawl

March 4th marked the date for a favorite event of nerds around Newsome. Hosted by Newsome’s own Green Club to raise money and awareness for cancer, the annual Brawling for Life tournament was an experience to be remembered.

This year over 50 participants entered into the tournament this year, hoping to prove their skills at the video game Super Smash Bros. and have fun with friends. In order to accommodate the 50+ people who participated, the tournament was held in the library immediately after school.

The tournament rules called for single elimination until the winner was decided in a final round of best 2 out of 3. Each match lasted until a player was knocked out of the stage twice, or 4 minutes had passed in which case sudden death would begin.

The overall feel of the tournament was exuberant and full of energy. For many matches, 30-40 people could be seen crowded around the players who were duking it out on glorious 1-on-1 combat. While some were nervous about the tournament, most of the participants entered for fun and to donate to the cause .

At the end of the day, Nick Metheny was pronounced the winner after a final round of playing Shulk against Marcell. While the grand prize was a gift card to Gamestop, the real prize was bragging rights about being the winner of Newsome’s own Super Smash Tournament.
