I Would Read This Book Everyday

Everyday by David Levithan is a wonderful novel that depicts life in various ways. Everyday, A, wakes in a new body with new memories and has to live life for a day in that body. They have to make sure not to disrupt that person’s life, or bad things will happen in the future.

The various lives that A has to live is very eye opening. They always wake up in a body that is 16 years old, and it is never the same body. When they wake up as Rhiannon boyfriend, A falls in love with her and promises to always come back to her.

“It demonstrates Levithan’s talent for empathy, which is paired in the best parts of the book with a persuasive optimism about the odds for happiness and for true love,” said New York Times.

A jumps body to body and intertwines their life into Rhiannon’s, to the point Rhiannon starts asking questions and A has to come clean to her. Rhiannon tries to be accepting, but falls short due to her biases and her lack of attraction to some of the bodies.

A is very unjudging, but can’t help wanting to be apart of the flawed lifestyle. They want to experience parties, love, death, and everything in between. A only wants to be with Rhiannon, and will stop at nothing to achieve their goal. This backfires at A, and affects their ambiguity.

“Rich in wisdom and wit…Levithan keeps the pages turning not only with ingenious twists on his central conceit but with A’s hard-earned pieces of wisdom about identity, isolation, and love. Every Day has the power to teach a bully empathy by answering an essential question: What’s it like to be you and not me — even if it’s just for one day,” said Entertainment Weekly.

A feels completely alone at times, which the reader can identity with. All the emotions they feel can pull on the heartstrings of the reader, or even make them crack a smile at the sarcastic nature of A.

David Levithan never fails to disappoint with his books, intended to teach this generation with the hardships we have yet to experience. By reading Everyday, I am now a fan of his works.
