The Truth About UF Decision Day

Drew Kozlin, Online Editor-in-Chief

The countdown that for some has extended almost a year is finally coming to an end this week. It is with either great pleasure or sadness that hundreds of Newsome seniors will open up their University of Florida acceptance decisions Friday the 12th at 6 PM.

So for those, like myself, who have been anxiously (and fearfully) awaiting this day for as long as they can remember, I would like to remind you that while Florida is a great school, it is not the only great school.

From the first day of high school, we are given no choice but to believe that UF is the best school in the state and that nothing else can compare. But the reality is quite contrary. While Florida does provide a tremendous education, every school specializes in different programs.

If you are looking at entering the medical field, USF stakes claim to one of the top schools in the nation. Similarly, if you are interested in business or criminal justice, FSU could be the place for you. The truth is, while the Gators boast a great education system, there are 2,618 four year universities in the United States that all have their own upsides that could be perfect for you, so why limit yourself to only being interested in one?

Additionally, there will certainly be great memories and amazing friendships awaiting you wherever you may end up. So as you continue counting down the minutes until this Friday at 6 PM, I ask that we all try to keep an open mind, because while being a Gator is a great option, it is not the only option, and in some cases it may not even be the best option.
